Weaving: Methods, Patterns, and Traditions of the Oldest Art
Weaving: Methods, Patterns, and Traditions of the Oldest Art
In all early cultures, weaving represented the image of creation. In this beautiful book, Martin presents the history, folklore, and techniques of weaving through various cultures. She explains and illustrates the three basic weave structures-plain weave, twills, and satins-along with many famous weaving patterns. Traditions of dyeing, fiber preparation, and spinning are introduced along with the rich legacy of myths and legends they have engendered. Diagrams illustrate the construction of various looms, from the simple backstrap loom to the complex and revolutionary Jacquard loom. For anyone who has ever knitted, sewn, or woven, this book is a treasure.

Jacquard loom - The Jacquard loom is a mechanical loom, invented by Joseph Marie Jacquard in 1801, which used the holes punched in pasteboard punch cards to control the weaving of patterns in fabric. The loom enabled even amateur weavers to weave complex designs.

Joseph Marie Jacquard - Joseph Marie Jacquard (7 July 1752–7 August 1834) was a French silk weaver and inventor, who improved on the original punched card design of Jacques de Vaucanson's loom of 1745, to invent the Jacquard loom in 1804-1805. Jacquard's loom is controlled by recorded patterns of holes in a string of cards.

Jacquard weaving - Jacquard weaving makes possible in almost any loom the raising of each warp thread independently of the others. This brings much greater versatility to the weaving process, and offers the highest level of warp yarn control.

Dobby loom - A dobby loom or a handloom is a loom in which each harness can be manipulated individually. This is in contrast to a treadle loom, where the harnesses are attached to a number of different treadles depending on the weave structure.
